Introduction

This assignment also requires you to submit a copy of your RAD file associated with your answer to Question 1. In addition you are also required to post a message, with the RAD file attached to the message, in TMA Forum.

This assignment has two questions: Question 1 carries 65% of the marks and Question 2 carries the remaining 35%. Question 1 involves a design task and a report using the CSLU Toolkit as described in detail below. Question 2 is linked with a tutor-group discussion that your tutor will initiate near the beginning of your study of this module, for which you will need to read two articles and contribute to the discussion online.

In designated parts of each question, marks will also be awarded for good communication skills; that is, for the structure, style, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

When you complete the assignment, compress all relevant files into one single compressed file. This file should be submitted through the AOU's Learning Management System (AOULMS). Online discussions related to this assignment should be posted in the forums labelled TMA Forum. If this forum doesn't exist in the course main page, then contact your tutor so this forum is made available.

Note the following important points about this assignment:
• The weighting of this assignment is 7%.
• The cut-off date is, 2018.
• This assignment assumes dd541 is offered through Moodle.
• The assignment assumes the use of a special forum called TMA Forum.
Question 1 (75 marks)
In this module, your focus was on how humans interact with and control various forms of information technology and communication systems, and in particular, the role that speech might play in facilitating such interaction. The module has encouraged you to learn through experimentation and reflection using the CSLU Toolkit.

This question provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of each of the following:
• the use of speech dialogues within an HTI context;
• the use of flowcharts to document a sequential process;
• the conversion of a paper design to a practical application;
• the review process undertaken during the course of design activities.

Scenario
A new innovative IT group, a joint-venture between Microsoft and Intel called Automated House (AH) has just announced the launch of their new project. The project aim is to connect some home appliance devices such as lights, ACs, widows, doors, telephone, and television to a central embedded computer system in order to be commanded via speech. This system is called Automated House (AH).Near each device a microphone will be installed and connected (wired or wireless) to the embedded system to forward the user’s commands. In addition to that, on each device (door, television, etc) there will be a special device attached that can interpret the commands received (wired or wireless) from the central embedded system and execute them. The embedded system is able to identify the device that needs to be controlled because each microphone has a different identification number. Note that near each device there will be a box and a graphic display device to produce synthesized texts and display information received form the embedded system to the user.

The embedded system can control each device as follows:
• Window and door can respond to three commands: open (half, completely), close.
• The telephone can respond to three commands: Receive a call, make a call followed by a name, hang up.
• The television can respond to six commands: turn on, turn off, move to the next channel, go back to the previous channel, increase the volume, and decrease the volume.
• The AC can respond to five commands: Turn on, turn off, select mode (cool or warm), increase temp, decrease temp.
• The light can respond to two commands: turn off, turn on.

Imagine that you are part of this AH initiative, and you have been given the task of designing and developing a simulation of a suitable voice recognition system using the CSLU Toolkit. Your task in this assignment is to construct a speech dialogue application that will provide the user interface to the main application programs in the AH.

At present the project roadmap is very general, we will assume that the system receive commands from the microphone, sends commands to a specific device while producing synthesized texts and displaying a corresponding message (on that device). At the beginning, we are intending to simulate only the cases of controlling the window, door, AC and light. This particular AH has a straightforward operating mode with a voice recognition interface and will provide the following functions:
• Wait until you have received a command from any microphone.
• Identify the origin of the message (is it from the door, window, AC or light).
• If you need further information such as open the door half or completely, ask the user to provide you with that information.
• Issue commands to the corresponding device and inform the user of what you have done via synthesized voice and display information.
• Be able to manage any predictable errors made by the user.




You have been allocated the following tasks:
• Preliminary design of the overall system.
• Development of a simulated interface, using the RAD application of the CSLU
An evaluation of the potential of this approach.
Tasks

a) Draw an annotated flow chart representing the process for programming and designing the AH. Your flowchart must indicate the various elements of the user interface speech, display and show how user errors will be handled. [20 marks]

b) Create a working RAD simulation for the AH. Your ‘RAD’ file (which is the file format produced by the CSLU toolkit) must be submitted with this assignment in order for your tutor to run your AH simulation. [35 marks]

c) Prepare a written evaluation for AH to go with the simulation that describes:

• your design, including decisions and assumptions you have made in reaching your design,
• your experience of building and testing the RAD simulation,
• Your assessment of the viability of such a speech interface and any issues the team will need to consider if the prototype is put into development.


Your account should be between 800 – 1000 words long.

At the end of your answer state the total number of words you have written for part (c). Your word count should include any headings, subheadings and tables you have used but may exclude figure captions. You will be penalized if you do not supply a word count and if you do not keep within the given limits. [20 marks]

Question 2 (25 marks)
This question refers to a tutor group activity that will run throughout this module. You’ll need to participate in this activity in parallel with your work on the module texts and the practical work. Note that you need to make sure you allocate sufficient time to contribute to the discussion in TMA Forum, since marks in Question 2 are allocated to evidence of your participation in the activity. The purpose of this activity is to:
• build on your search skills.
• provide a forum for the discussion of relevant issues related to the use of speech-based system interfacing.
• provide an opportunity for you to gain experience in computer conferencing.

Book C, Context, offers a view of some basic concepts in HTI to provide a context for you to reflect on the motivations and possible implications of the use of speech-based interfaces. This will provide the background for a discussion in TMA Forum.

The discussion will be supplemented by articles which you choose to relate your experience of user interfaces to the wider framework presented in Book C, Context. You will need to search the internet (use Google or another search engine or the OU online library) for the two articles and the URL for each should be posted in the conference.

It is very important that you participate in this discussion because you’ll be working collaboratively with your fellow students intensively in Module 4 of the course; so this activity gives you practice. It also lets you begin to get to know other students in your tutor group.

Your tutor will set up the activity at the beginning of your study of this module. You should feel free to start contributing as soon as you have identified and read your articles, but do make sure that you have picked up some basic ideas and terminology from the module before you tackle the articles and the discussion.

Your tutor will initiate the conferencing activity and organize TMA Forum, but won’t be an active participant. Your tutor will also signpost the end of the activity. It’s up to you and your fellow students to keep the discussion lively and interesting by contributing your thoughts, opinions and questions. If you all wait until the last minute to contribute then no interesting discussion will develop and everyone’s marks will suffer.


a) Forum discussion: As an individual you will contribute to the discussion by:
• posting in TMA Forum the URL of two web articles or web pages that cover a relevant aspect of HTI;
• drawing on your understanding of the points made in your web articles and the material presented in Book C, Context, Parts I and 2 when you make your contributions;
• contributing your own experience and/or ideas on points made in the articles you (or any other student) have posted and other relevant points you may wish to raise;
• responding to the contributions of other members of your group in order to move the discussion forward;
• remaining active over the period in which the discussion should last – some 3 to 4 weeks.

You are expected to contribute at least three messages to TMA Forum. These three messages must, between them, demonstrate all of points above.

b) Summarizing: Towards the end of the activity, you must prepare a summary (500 – 600 words) which draws together two or three of the points raised in the discussion that you consider most important, explaining why you consider them important.

Notes and marking criteria

Question 1

You should submit through the AOULMS the following items compressed in one file to your tutor.

• A clearly labelled flowchart of the process for setting the parameters for the AH interface. Ensure you use the flowchart symbols appropriately, as set out in Book D.
• A copy of your RAD file for the simulated interface.
• Your evaluative report on the speech recognition simulation interface for the client.


This is very much a design activity so you are encouraged to use the tools at your disposal. For example, although not an explicit requirement, you may find it helpful to work through each stage of the STAIR strategy to ensure that you understand the task. You might also find it helpful to use hierarchical task decomposition (HTD) diagram to help you identify the various modules of your design.

Another important point for you to bear in mind is that you are not expected to arrive at the perfect design of a speech interface – if such a thing even exists. Instead you are asked to work through the design process and make a reasonable attempt to produce something for the OpenSoft. You might, for example, decide that one element might have performed more consistently if your approach had been different. Perhaps you can see an alternative way to decompose the task. There are always valuable lessons to be learnt ‘on reflection’.

The target audience for your evaluation is the client, so you may assume a reasonable degree of technical literacy, but not necessarily about speech interfaces. So you will need to be careful in deciding which terms are ‘everyday’, which terms are ‘technical’ and which terms are ‘speech recognition’ specific. If you are in doubt err on the side of caution. When writing your evaluation keep the structure simple, but make sure you cover the key points. Within your evaluation try to think about the sort of information the client needs in order to proceed with the design (or not, if that is your recommendation).

a) A flowchart which: (20 marks)
• clearly indicates how the elements of the user interface are processed
• shows how errors are handled
• is appropriately labelled
• Conforms to the requirements for flowcharts. Ensure you use the flowchart symbols appropriately, as in Book D

b) Working RAD file (35 marks)
• A RAD file that will demonstrate the simulation for the interface for the machine.

c) An evaluation of the design activity (20 marks)
• content of the evaluation (16 marks)
• style of the report (4 marks)





Question 2

• A paper copy of the message containing your chosen internet articles.
• Paper copies of three of your contributed messages to TMA Forum.
• A paper copy of your summary (500 – 600 words) of two or three important points in the group discussion.

The marks for this question will be awarded as follows:
